Your gut bacteria can make one of the most powerful compounds in the human body. It's called butyrate — and most people have never heard of it.
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), and is among the most extensively studied products of colonic bacterial fermentation.
So how does this actually work?
You can't just buy butyrate at the store and eat it. Your gut has to make it.
Butyrate is a compound your gut bacteria make when you feed them the right kind of fiber. Production depends on a microbial process known as cross-feeding. It begins with fermentable substrates such as resistant starch. This particular fiber has a special quality: it travels gently through your upper digestive system without breaking down, then ferments fully once it reaches your colon, nourishing your gut exactly where it needs it most.
That fermentation feeds a type of bacteria called Bifidobacterium. As Bifidobacterium grows, it ends up supporting other bacteria that specialize in making butyrate. This is called cross-feeding, and it's how your gut ends up producing more butyrate than it would otherwise.

In a randomized crossover trial, 40g of resistant starch daily significantly reduced visceral and subcutaneous fat and increased GLP-1 secretion in normal-weight adults, with Akkermansia among the gut microbes showing notable shifts after the intervention. Separately, lab research on Akkermansia muciniphila has found it can trigger a substantial, dose-dependent rise in GLP-1 secretion from human intestinal cells — the hormone involved in blood sugar regulation and appetite control.
2. It helps fortify your gut lining.
Butyrate has been shown to reduce inflammation-induced gut barrier damage and increase the tight junction proteins that hold the intestinal lining together. A weaker gut lining lets things like histamine leak into your bloodstream, which may cause bloating or food sensitivities.
3. It's tied to real metabolic changes.
There's research connecting resistant starch and butyrate to lower abdominal fat, better cholesterol numbers, and fewer of the markers that show up before insulin resistance develops.
A randomized placebo-controlled trial in 37 adults with excess body weight found that resistant starch supplementation over 8 weeks led to an average weight loss of 2.8kg and improved insulin resistance, changes linked to shifts in gut bacteria composition and reduced inflammation from a restored intestinal barrier. In the crossover trial, LDL cholesterol also decreased following resistant starch intake.

Here's the problem: most people aren't getting nearly enough resistant starch to trigger this process.
A 2020 study estimated Americans get about 4 grams of resistant starch daily on a 2,000-calorie diet, well below the researchers' suggested target of 15 grams. Broader estimates put global resistant starch intake between 3 and 10 grams per day, while most researchers recommend somewhere in the 15–20 gram range for meaningful gut and metabolic benefits.
Simple Ways to Feed Your Good Gut Bacteria
A few consistent changes are enough to help you get this process going.
Cook and cool your starches: When you let cooked potatoes, rice, or pasta cool down before eating them, they turn into resistant starch. This means they pass through your stomach without breaking down and make it all the way to your lower gut intact.
Eat a variety of resistant starches: Oats, lentils, beans, green bananas, and cooled potatoes are all great choices. Not all fiber works the same way. Resistant starch specifically is what drives this process, so it's worth including a few of these regularly.
Add a targeted fiber supplement: Take the guesswork out of your intake by using a supplement that delivers the precise fibers required to feed butyrate-producing bacteria.
Stay consistent. This isn't something that happens after one meal. Cross-feeding builds over time as your gut bacteria adapt to a steady supply of the right fuel. The more consistently you feed them, the better this process works.
