DHEA is a hormone that is naturally produced by the human body in the adrenal glands. It has been shown that the serum levels often decline 75-80% from optimal levels by age 70, leading to various hormonal imbalances that can affect the quality of life. Blood levels of DHEA peak at approximately age 25, and slowly but progressively decline thereafter. This marked decreased in DHEA serum levels associated with age, is believed to play a role in age-related health problems. Research shows oral supplementation of DHEA, supports the restoration of youthful levels to support optimum health.
For the past three decades, thousands of research studies have been published on various health benefits, including positive effects on mood, quality of life, and body composition. Additional studies have shown beneficial effect on increased muscle mass and strength with the addition of exercise, enhanced wellbeing, mood and sexual function in youth and in older women, as well as the aging brain.
In a randomized, double-blind, controlled study, DHEA supplementation for one full year, helped protect bone density in the hip of older adults and spinal bone density in older women. DHEA has also been shown in additional studies to support a health cardiovascular system, as well as joint and bone health.
Standard blood tests to evaluate DHEA status should be performed in order to assess the optimal dosage. Both Men and Women should consult with their physician prior to DHEA as there are different precautions
for each that should be observed.
